New Haven-based Deadby5am Leads Entrepreneurship Dialogue, Emphasizing Community Focus with EMERGE Connecticut

NEW HAVEN, Conn. [February 23, 2024] - EMERGE Connecticut, in collaboration with New Haven-based business, Deadby5am (DB5) hosted EMERGE Celebrates Black History: Spotlight on Justice-Impacted Advocacy, Reentry & Entrepreneurship, a conversation and Q&A session on finding freedom through expression, justice, art, and entrepreneurship on Friday.

“A huge part of the work we do at EMERGE is focused around extending avenues for formerly incarcerated people to increase access to career paths and have space to heal while making the transition home,” said EMERGE Connecticut Executive Director Alden Woodcock. “We thank DB5 for coming into our space and spearheading this conversation which was enlightening and empowering for our Crewmembers and staff.”

EMERGE Connecticut, a nonprofit social enterprise, operates a dual model approach pairing paid employment with trauma-informed support for people making their transitions home from incarceration.

In addition to the conversation, DB5 will also be donating a portion of the proceeds to EMERGE Connecticut from the release of a limited edition original design T-shirt. The design was created to speak on the shared strife that the criminal justice system has perpetuated for generations.

“I want to make impactful and vibrant things,” said DB5 Owner and Creator Brenton Shumaker. “It's important to show that young Black people are involved with things that are happening in the community and using their voice in an appropriate fashion. It makes sense for us to find an organization and give. We want to give to them however much we make from the tees and make sure everyone gets a piece.”

ABOUT EMERGE CONNECTICUT

EMERGE Connecticut assists individuals with previous incarceration experiences by providing training in valuable skills, offering targeted mental health support, and presenting access to job opportunities. EMERGE’s approach involves transitional employment, connecting participants with comprehensive services to disrupt the cycle of recidivism, foster community building, and instill hope in those reintegrating into society. We not only train individuals in marketable skills for competitive wages, but also utilize transitional employment as a means to break the cycle of recidivism, foster community connections, and inspire hope.
